(National, April 3, 2018) – “It is time to end lead risks to all children”, said Claire Barnett, Executive Director of Healthy Schools Network, the national not for profit that cofounded and hosts Healthy Schools Day. She added, “For the 16th annual Day, we thank all the education and health leaders in the states who have recognized the high cost of lead to the future of children and are taking action to find and to reduce lead in school and child care settings.”

There is no safe level of lead for any child, according to US EPA, the federal Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, and the American Academy of Pediatrics. In fact, like many other health hazards common to educational facilities, lead has been ignored too long. Recently however, schools and child care facilities in dozens of states have become active on lead in drinking water. In fact, lead is ubiquitous: it is in paint, water, building and instructional materials, soil and products. Schools in poor communities are often in the worst condition, suggesting they may also have the most lead in old paint….

Since 2002 parents, teachers, school nurses, custodians, advocates, and agencies have promoted National Healthy Schools Day activities nationwide. Whether you are at the beginning stages of investigating school environments or have an established Indoor Air/Environmental Quality program, we invite you to host a local activity that educates others and celebrates your school’s successes.

National Healthy Schools Day is coordinated by Healthy Schools Network in partnership with many agencies and organizations.  Together we promote the use of EPA’s IAQ Tools for Schools guidance as well as other EPA environmental health guidelines and programs for schools and children’s health.
