of a building, and can provide
exceptional R-values in difficult
places like vaulted ceilings.
When properly applied, SPF
generally doesn't cause occu-
pant complaints and seems to
perform pretty much as adver-
tised. But there appears to be
a growing base of SPF proj-
ects that have resulted in a
range of IAQ-related occupant
problems. Many appear to
have been the result of appli-
cator error or failure to use the
necessary indoor environmen-
tal controls during the applica-
tion and curing stages.
For whatever the reasons,
potential buyers should clearly
enter into SPF application with
their eyes open by doing some
front-end research on the prod-
ucts and the applicator firms
prior to moving forward. A
good understanding of both the
product's benefits and possible
pitfalls is highly recommended,
along with a plan to reduce any
potential negative IAQ impact.
