Gateway (or GBIG), Education @USG-
BC, Greenbuild International Conference
& Expo, our LEED User groups, service
activities like Green Apple Day of Ser-
vice, community engagement with our 76
chapters. Education and engagement
are the keys to catalyzing market trans-
formation because they are a way of
learning that is deeply rooted in our lives
– we're talking about buildings where we
live, work, play, and learn. Every story
about a green building is a story about
people.
HI: About 15 years ago, you gave a
presentation about the newly formed
USGBC at an IAQ conference at the
Sheraton University Hotel in Syracuse
(yes, we were there). What was your
vision for USGBC and the green build-
ing movement then, and looking
back, what do you feel were
the biggest achieve-
ments? What
remains
as
unfinished business?
Fedrizzi: It's incredible to me that it has
been 15 years since that conference
– even 21 years since we founded US-
GBC. The vision for USGBC and our
mission has always been to transform
the built environment and to create sus-
tainable building and communities that
regenerate and sustain the health and
vitality of everyone within a generation.
Some of our biggest achievements have
been the launch of LEED v4, our latest
version of the LEED rating system, which
is going to bring the industry to new
heights of innovation and performance.
The LEED Dynamic Plaque is a game
changer because it allows us to focus on
outcomes, create a continuous cycle of
improvement, and get to a place of see-
ing LEED buildings as living systems.
