With third-party accreditation, however, a certi- fication becomes a reliable measure of knowl- edge and expertise. Professionals can build their reputations on the credibility that such certifications communicate. By the same token, homeowners and property managers who de- mand accredited certifications can quickly and efficiently make the best decisions for maintain- ing healthy indoor environments. Third-party Accredited IAQ Certifications Of the dozens of IAQ-related certification pro- grams currently in operation, only a small mi- nority carry third-party accreditation. In addi- tion, many of these focus on fields only slightly related to Indoor Air Quality. Examples include the Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Certified Safety Professional (CSP) and Certified Haz- ardous Materials Manager (CHMM). Third-party accredited certifications dedicated specifically to Indoor Air Quality include the Council-certified Indoor Environmental Consul- tant (CIEC), Council-certified Microbial Consul- tant (CMC), Council-certified Microbial Reme- diation Supervisor (CMRS), Council-certified Environmental Infection Control Consultant (CEICC) and 14 others offered by the American Council for Accredited Certification (ACAC).
