As part of the planning process, a core team of ASHRAE members with BOD representation brainstormed specific actionsand PLC provided the BOD with an estimate of resources needed to implement each action. Table 5 provides the actionsand estimated resources. These are provided for reference only to assistvolunteers in setting the actual program plans and budgets." First, there is the recognition that ASHRAE has only played a minor role to date yet has resources that have great application to Residential. Second, since others are already involved ASHRAE's role is more likely through collaboration with other groups focused on the residential sector. IAQA is such a group so it is appropriate that we today learn more about what resources ASHRAE can provide and how those might flange up with the work of IAQA. Introduction Since the topic of our discussion today is the impact of Maintenance on IAQ, it is helpful for us to consider several topics: 1. What is IAQ? I know we talk about that endlessly, however it is helpful to also know how ASHRAE views the topic. 2. What Maintenance resources are available from ASHRAE? After all, this is a "Design" society; what do they know about maintenance? 3. What are the differences between Commercial and Residential relative to both Maintenance and IAQ? IAQ,the ASHRAE Perspective ASHRAE has a lot to say about the indoor environment (some would say; too much) including the following: Standard 52.2 - Method of Testing General Ventilation Air Cleaning Devices for Removal Efficiency by Particle Size Standard 55 - Thermal Environmental Conditions for Human Occupancy Standard 62 (1 & 2) – Ventilation for Acceptable Indoor Air Quality Standard 161 – Air Quality Within Commercial Aircraft Standard 189 - Standard for the Design of High-Performance, Green Buildings In addition, ASHRAE sponsors a technical conference on Indoor Air Quality every three years and the program content at Annual and Winter meetings routinely features IAQ related topics. Several of ASHRAE's Standing and Technical Committees have a strong interest in and impact on IAQ. Probably most important is a less well known document: Guideline 10 - Interactions Affecting the Achievement of Acceptable Indoor Environments. This document, published in 2010 after a nearly 20 year development history, documents the fact that IAQ is far from simple. It is impacted by many factors such as odor, contaminates, sound, light, glare, vibration and it largely an individual perception as opposed to a steady state that can be identified using objective criteria. Thus, doing something that impacts IAQ either positively or negatively is far from a clear path. ASHRAE; Maintenance Resources
