Session 504 - Testing Envelope Assemblies: Windows, Doors, Floors, and Walls - Fred McKnight

December 7, 2019

IAQ & Energy 2019 Conference, Session 504: I don’t know a facility owner anywhere that would accept a leaky wall assembly, skylight, or foundation wall. Making the building enclosure work for the owner requires that the components of the wall and roof assemblies be installed properly and that the components of each assembly are integrated to provide a water proof assembly that is also air tight and energy efficient. What tests should be completed on the separate assemblies and integrated components to verify that the assemblies will meet owner’s expectations, or at least the specifications? We’ll review what tests, measurements, and observations are good to complete during new construction project or renovation project of existing assemblies. Tests to consider include adhesion tests, cohesion test, density tests, air tightness testing, water intrusion tests, testing for conductive and convective heat energy losses.
